Documentary Screening: Outgrow the System

raFilm

”Change the system, not the climate” is commonly heard, but what does it actually mean? Meet the new economic perspectives that have the potential to change the world at its core.

In March 2024, in collaboration with the Wellbeing Economy Alliance of Aotearoa (WEAll) and Degrowth Aotearoa, we co-hosted a screening of Outgrow the System - a documentary from Swedish documentary making collective - raFilm.se.

This was our inaugural event of 2024, and took place in the beautiful carbon-positive venue Two/fiftyseven on Willis Street, Wellington.

Outgrow the System is a documentary about transitioning to a sustainable economic system, by Cecilia Paulsson and Anders Nilsson.

The doco interviews thinkers who present new ideas and models for an economy that is in service of planet and people - perhaps most famously: Dr Kate Raworth author of Donut Economics, and Dr Timothée Parrique, who also has a PhD in Economics. The film also feature examples of people, communities and businesses doing things differently to traditional capitalism - in ways that are good for people and planet. How outrageous!

Takeaway quotes from the notebook:

We tend to sub-ordinate culture and nature to the economy.
If the economy worked well, it would be getting smaller, and we'd work less.
900 empirical studies show that green growth cannot work.
A biophysical diet needs to be appled to wealthy countries.
We need to shift from economic production to need satisfaction.
10 billionaire men doubled their income during the COVID pandemic, while 99% of us were worse off, and while 88% of people don't have their basic nutrition needs met.
Global economic architecture: Equador was sued for the right not to drill and had to pay the equivalent of their health budget for a year.

This description from the filmmakers:

The original meaning of the word ”economy” is "household management”. The economy of today however, is not householding, but rather consuming our finite natural resources at an alarming pace. "Outgrow the System" explores how we can return to the essence of the term and design an economic system that genuinely manages our scarce resources.

Beyond the narrow mainstream debate and the teachings of business schools, numerous new economic ideas and practices are emerging. They challenge old assumptions and offer fresh perspectives on how we can reorganize our production and consumption, in order to ensure our survival as a species on this planet.

"Outgrow the System" aims to bring these transformative ideas to the forefront. It celebrates the abundance of creativity and ideas that exist worldwide, urging them to collide and converge. The film envisions a world where social movements worldwide can rally behind positive visions instead of merely opposing dystopias.

With this film we want to democratize the conversation around the economy, ecology, and democracy. Economics should    be a topic accessible to all, not confined to experts. We wish to empower viewers to engage in discussions about economic models and to foster hope that change is not only possible, but already underway. Let's join in the movement for change!

Our goal for the evening was to ensure people had chance to really connect, listen, share ideas, and explore new perspectives.

While the topic of a broken system with all that it implies can feel heavy, we can bring curiosity, compassion, love and creativity to any topic - and this is what we tried to exemplify. Thank you to everyone who joined us, we were humbled and uplifted by the as always by the kindness and goodness in the room. We are stronger together.
